Growing tired of the 2 to 3 hour commute by car as it’s a total waste of time, I bought a bike and rode to work. 100km for a first run. Got up at 4 and while I had originally planned to put the bike in the car and only do the last 15km or so, I just got on and started riding. Long story short, a little over 5hrs later I arrived at work.
That’s about 6 years ago now and in the process, I have changed bikes, buillt bikes and wheels from scratch, bought too many lights, tyres, gear and bags, and even though I think I’m now comfortable and know when to use what, it’s still an improving process.
In the meantime, I’m a fully qualified bicycle mechanic, as I learnt that on sundays or by the time you get home, there aren’t too many shops open anymore and you need to go to work the next day. There’s that, and the fact that I’m quite the spoke-snapper. Haven’t broken a single spoke on (m)any of my self-built wheels.
